Let's Sing

More examples of literary devices but now in music.

Let me know before you go go – WHAM!

“You put the boom boom into my heart”
Onomatopoeia: “Boom boom” is making reference to the sound of the speaker’s heart beat.

“You send my soul sky high when your lovin’ starts”

Alliteration: The repetition of the consonant “s” draws the listener’s attention to the words and emphasizes the impact speaker’s lover has on him.
“Wake me up before you go go
Don’t leave me hanging on like a yo-yo
Wake me up before you go go
I don’t want to miss it when you hit that high…”
Repetition: This strophe is the most important part of this song. It is repeated several times to retain the information and think about it after the song is over.

“Don’t leave me hanging on like a yo-yo”
Simile: The speaker is comparing his emotional ups and downs to the movement of a yo-yo to create a visual impact on the audience.

“You make the sun shine brighter than Doris Day”

Allusion: This makes reference to a 1950’s actress, Doris Day. It is comparing Doris Day to the sun shine.

Literary Devices

Songs are not just a group of words put together; they have strong meanings that we can ignore if we don’t pay enough attention.
Here are two songs with some literary devices on them:
 Firework - Katty Perry

“Do you ever feel
Feel so paper-thin
Like a house of cards
One blow from caving in”
Simile: This strophe emphasizes and describes the person’s weakness and delicacy to focus on the fact he/she is unsettled.
“Do you know that there's
Still a chance for you
Cause there's a spark in you”

Metaphor: A spark is compared to the person’s strengths. A spark turns into a flame, just like the person needs to turn their virtues into great actions.

"Cause baby, you’re a firework
Come on show ‘em what you’re worth
Make ‘em go, “Aah, aah, aah”
As you shoot across the sky
Baby, you’re a firework
Come on let your colors burst
Make ‘em go “Aah, aah, aah”
You’re gonna leave them all in awe, awe, awe”

Repetition: The chorus is repeated to make people remember the intention of the song, that is that everybody is powerful, strong, and stunning, no matter how bad, hopeless, or helpless you feel.

“If you only knew What the future holdsAfter a hurricanecomes a rainbow”
Metaphor: This compares the sadness to a storm, and tells people that it will pass and everything will be fantastic and beautiful, like a rainbow.
